XXIII International Nitrogen Workshop
The XXIII Nitrogen Workshop will take place in Sassari from May 25 to 29, 2026. This edition, entitled “Managing Nitrogen in the Water-Energy-Food Nexus”, brings together researchers, technicians, policy makers, and stakeholders from across the world to address current advances, emerging challenges, and future perspectives in nitrogen research and management. At a time when agriculture must simultaneously ensure food security, environmental protection, climate change mitigation, and resource efficiency, improving nitrogen management is a central challenge for the sustainability of agroecosystems worldwide.
Reactive nitrogen losses continue to drive greenhouse gas emissions, air and water pollution, biodiversity decline, and soil degradation, while representing major inefficiencies in agricultural production. Addressing these challenges requires integrated, interdisciplinary approaches linking biophysical processes, technological innovation, socio-economic dimensions, and governance frameworks across multiple scales. The transition toward sustainable nitrogen management depends not only on science and technology, but also on effective policies, stakeholder engagement, and adaptive governance systems.
The conference offers a rich programme of keynote lectures, panel discussions, oral and poster sessions, field visits, and networking opportunities spanning nitrogen cycling, greenhouse gas emissions, digital agriculture, modelling, policy, and circularity. We are honoured to host internationally renowned keynote speakers who will advance interdisciplinary dialogue and strengthen collaborations among science, institutions, industry, and policy.
Partners from CEIGRAM-UPM presented the RAINS project in a presentation at the event, called “Upscaling water and nutrient solutions in Mediterranean cropping systems to reduce water and fertilizer demand at the regional scale: the RAINS project”.
